Iraqi president condemns US attack on PMU bases as death toll reaches 25

Iraqi President Barham Salih has condemned Washingtons attacks on Kataib Hezbollah, which is part of Iraqs Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), as the death toll from the air raids reaches more than two dozen.

The Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported on Friday that Salih decried the attacks as being unacceptable and damaging for the country, adding that the strikes were contrary to security agreements inked between Baghdad and Washington.

Major General Abdul Karim Khalaf, spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, also said that Adel Abdul-Mahdi, currently Iraqs caretaker prime minister, has voiced his opposition to the attacks in a message to US Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

"Bombing PMU bases is a dangerous aggravation which endangers the security of Iraq and the region," Iraqi media sources cited Abdul-Mahdi as saying.

The premier also reportedly ordered Iraqs Joint Operations Command (JOC) to not allow any air or land-based operations to take place in the country without the governments approval.

Earlier on Friday, US forces conducted drone strikes on a number of Kataib Hezbollah bases in Iraqs western Anbar province, killing at least 25 individuals and leaving another 51 injured, according to the PMU.

The targeted Kataib Hezbollah forces belonged to brigades 45 and 46 of the PMU, according to PMU official Jawad Kazim al-Rabiawi.

Following the strikes, the Pentagon issued a statement saying that it had targeted three locations of the Iraqi fighters in Iraq and two in Syria in response to alleged attacks targeting American forces.

The air raids were welcomed by Israels foreign minister, Yisrael Katz, who described the event as a "turning point in the regional response to Iran and its proxies".

Washington and Tel Aviv regularly label popular resistance movements opposed to US presence in Iraq as "Iran-led terrorist groups", a label which has been vehemently rejected by Iraqi officials.

Kataib hezbollah, along with other units operating under the PMU, have had a major role in defending Iraq from the Deash Takfiri terrorist group, which swept across Iraq in 2014.

Calls for united anti-US front

In a short statement, Kataib Hezbollah described the attacks as "disregard and humiliation for the sovereignty and honor of the Iraqi nation".

The attacks targeted "our sons which were defending our countrys western borders," the statement said, calling on the countrys security forces to "prepare for a new page" of "honor and dignity" in dislodging US forces from the country.

Iraqs Asaib Ahl al-Haq group, which is part of the PMU, also issued a statement calling for all of the countrys political factions to respond to Washingtons "cowardly attack".

"Today, ending US military presence in Iraq is essential by all means necessary before it lasts any longer," the statement read.

Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the PMUs second-in-command, stressed that American forces will receive a harsh response for the incident.

Falih Khazali, a lawmaker affiliated to Iraqs Fatah parliamentary bloc, said that the raids signaled that the US "has entered into a clear war with Iraq" and that it has not yet "learned from the consequences of its occupation of Iraq".

Senior Iraqi Shia cleric and political leader Ammar al-Hakim also described the American raids as a clear violation of Iraqs sovereignty and security agreements signed between the two countries.

He urged the government and parliament to adopt a firm position in response to the American strikes.

According to the Yemeni al-Masirah news network, Yemens Houthi Ansarullah movement has also condemned the US attacks and has called on Arab and Muslim countries to reject foreign intervention in the region and to support the government and people of Iraq.

Following the developments, Iraqs al-Hadath TV reported that the US has withdrawn dozens of civilian workers from its Baghdad embassy.
